Rhinoplasties aren’t for everyone. While they can be incredibly beneficial for many patients looking to augment the size of their nose or enhance its appearance, it’s important to understand well in advance if someone is suitable for the procedure. Are you interested in getting a nose job but aren’t sure if you’d make a good candidate? Here’s what you need to know.
When determining whether or not you’re a suitable candidate for rhinoplasty, we will conduct a thorough evaluation of your past medical history and current overall health. We will discuss any current conditions you may have and will need to know what medications and supplements you’re currently taking.
Believe it or not, there are certain medications out there that can compromise a rhinoplasty procedure. If we believe that you’re on any medication that isn’t suitable for a nose job, we recommend speaking to your doctor to see if you can take a break for 2 weeks before and after the operation.
We will also need to discuss your overall heart health in depth. In order to receive a rhinoplasty, you must be free from any heart conditions. If you have a history of strokes or heart attacks, you would not be considered a suitable candidate for this procedure. It’s dangerous to put someone with heart problems under general anaesthesia, and it’s always best to err on the side of caution when working with new patients.
Lastly, if you have a history of lung conditions such as lung cancer, pneumonia or bronchitis, you would not be considered a suitable candidate for rhinoplasty. You must have strong lungs to be put under general anaesthesia.
Pregnancy has an all-encompassing effect on the body. It’s entirely devoted to creating a precious little miracle inside your tummy and needs all the energy it can get. Rhinoplasties require a recovery process that wouldn’t be suitable for pregnant women. The same goes for breastfeeding - both pregnancy and breastfeeding deplete you of energy. Energy is crucial for a seamless rhinoplasty recovery.
Smokers don’t make for strong rhinoplasty candidates. We generally require our patients to go 12 weeks without nicotine before taking part in the procedure due to its effect on blood pressure. This could have an effect on how your body responds to anaesthesia.
During our consultation, we will discuss what your expectations are about the procedure in question. While each patient may require a different approach, there are some universal elements that apply to everyone such as being put under general anaesthesia or sanitising the skin around your nose.
We will also speak with you to understand your overall end goal. We pride ourselves on honesty and will provide you with an explanation of the realistic results you can expect. It’s important to understand that this may vary from person to person depending on a variety of factors.
